Part of rural Index-Galena road closed due to flood damage

EVERETT — Snohomish County Public Works officials temporarily closed a portion of a remote road near Index on Monday due to damage from flooding.

A portion of the Index-Galena Road, which follows the north fork of the Skykomish River east of the rural town of Index, will remain closed through the winter season, the department announced in a press release. The road is closed between milepost 10 to the west and milepost 14 to the east.

Winter closures are typical along the road due to the amount of snow and ice that can accumulate during the season. But this year’s floods forced the county to close the road earlier than usual, as floodwaters had damaged a section of the road just beyond a bridge.

“Because of this recent flood damage and the volume of snow and ice that can accumulate during winter months, it’s both prudent and practical to close the road now and maintain safety,” Public Works Deputy Director Doug McCormick wrote in a press release.
