75% of likely Washington voters back bill to strengthen qualifications and accountability for all sheriffs and police
chiefs

Three-fourths of likely 2026 Washington voters enthusiastically favor pending legislation in the Legislature that would strengthen qualifications and accountability standards for all sheriffs, police chiefs, and town marshals, the Northwest Progressive Institutes latest Civic Heartbeat poll of the Evergreen State electorate has found.
75% of 600 respondents surveyed last week by Emerson College Polling for NPI said they supported Senate Bill 5974, prime sponsored by Senator John Lovick (D‑44th District: Snohomish County) which passed out of the Senate 3019 on February 12th and is now in the House of Representatives awaiting a floor vote following a rules pull yesterday. Only 18% said they were opposed, while another 4% said they were not sure.
5974s official short description is modernizing and strengthening laws concerning sheriffs, police chiefs, town marshals, law enforcement agency volunteers, youth cadets, specially commissioned officers, and police matrons. The legislation would ensure that those who lead law enforcement are subject to the same professional standards and accountability mechanisms, no matter which agency they lead.

The bills prime sponsor Senator Lovick is a well-respected legislator who has served as a Washington State Patrol sergeant and as the Executive and Sheriff for Snohomish County, and he appreciates how important professional qualifications and accountability standards are. Without them, community trust in law enforcement evaporates.
