French multi-national pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis paid a doctor from Spokane more than $37,000 to travel to Athens and Paris in 2015.
The same year, Gardasil and Singulair maker Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. paid a doctor from Seattle almost $14,000 to travel to Australia.
Sanofi and Merck together paid out nearly $1 million in Washington last year, and they're far from alone.
Washington physicians received more than $48.6 million last year for travel and entertainment, consulting fees and royalties from drug and device companies, according to data released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
There has long been concern that if a provider is getting paid by a company that sells a service or product, that it will color the providers decisions about the best way to treat patients.
