EXCLUSIVE: Port of Seattle CEO resigned amid probe into $4.7M payout to 642 employees
Port of Seattle CEO Ted Fick's Thursday resignation came one day after auditors briefed port officials on their probe into $4.7 million in additional compensation to hundreds of port employees.
The Washington State Auditor's Office concluded the arrangement violated Washington state's Constitution as an unlawful gifting of public funds, Kathleen Cooper, the auditor's assistant director of communications, told the Business Journal.
State auditors came across the payments, made last year to 642 salaried port employees, during a regularly scheduled accountability audit at the port, she said. They briefed Port of Seattle executives about their draft findings during a private meeting Wednesday.
The state auditor recommended the Port of Seattle conduct a legal review to decide if the public agency must take extra steps "to determine if repayment is necessary or required by the law," Cooper said.
The State Auditor's Office declined to say whether Fick's resignation was related to the payouts.
