A low-profile Sen. Cantwell tops Hutchison in poll
U.S. Senate races in other states are already being fought out on TV screens, with special interests shoveling out money to weaken incumbents. Here, however, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., has occupied a cocoon of comfort.
Cantwell hasn't even announced for re-election. She has stayed backstage much of the time, relentlessly raising a warchest that approached $5 million at the last campaign reporting period.
She didn't even have a "name" opponent until ex-State Republican Chair Susan Hutchison filed at the last minute on Friday.
The liberal on-line activists of Northwest Progressive Institute are out with the first poll in the race, taken Tuesday and Wednesday by Public Policy Polling, which managed to contact 675 voters with automated land line calls and in-person cell phone interviews.
The poll puts Cantwell ahead of Hutchison by a 52-36 percent margin. Public Policy Polling has Democratic roots. But it has a record of accuracy, particularly in mapping downturns in President Obama's popularity that hurt Democrats in the 2010 and 2014 election cycles.
