Man catches enormous catfish at Seattle's Green Lake
The season has come for a lot of dips down to Green Lake to escape (or enjoy) the heat. But that water is not quite as safe -- or merely green -- as you expected; you may not be swimming alone.
Ahmed Majeed posted a picture with a fish he reportedly caught while fishing in Green Lake this past weekend, and it's so big that it may be in the running for the biggest "channel cat" ever captured in the state.
Majeed, who works at Microsoft in Redmond, told the Northwest Sportsman Magazine that he doesn't often fish in Green Lake, but became intrigued when he heard there was more than trout swimming around there. Which is true: A number of fish have been introduced to the man-made lake over the years, including carp and largemouth bass.
Channel catfish were released at the lake when they were around 11-inches in 2005, 2011 and 2014, fielding about 3,500 catfish over the years. As Northwest Sportsman notes, this could mean that the catfish Majeed caught is somewhere around 15 years old, maybe even a little older.
After having his rod out for two hours, he says it took about 20 minutes to land the catfish, bending the hook in the process.
"I couldn't lift it with solo handed," Majeed told the magazine. "I thought, 'It's 40 pounds.' When I got home I put it on the scale I have. It scaled 45 pounds."
