Is Gov. Jay Inslee really running for Vice President?
At latest count, no fewer than 31 Democratic politicians of many backgrounds are plotting, pondering or have thought about running for their party's 2020 nomination to take on President Trump.
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee is thinking big.
Inslee is revving up a political action committee, although still in its startup stages compared to war chests of the likes of Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders.
He used the job of chairman of the Democratic Governors Association to make forays into early voting states of Iowa and Nevada. Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter did just that when he held the DGA job in 1976.
Inslee has yet to make any pundit's "Top Ten" list of presidential timber. He has received little notice aside from quasi-breathless coverage in his home state media.
Yet, there is a path for Inslee to make the ticket -- as second banana.
The press is on for Democrats to put a woman atop their ticket, and finally bust the glass ceiling against which Hillary Clinton's campaign spattered two years ago. As well, in Booker and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., the party has impressive, front rank prospects who are African American.
The balancing of a 2020 ticket would be to nominate a white guy, preferably a "conviction politician" to use the phrase that Republicans coined to describe Ronald Reagan.
