Sound Publishing plans to close Seattle Weekly and community papers on the Eastside

Sound Publishing is planning to cease Seattle Weekly's publication, the company confirmed Monday.

A source close to Sound Publishing said the company will eventually close papers on the Eastside, but Sound Publishing President Josh O’Connor said in an email the company has no other operational changes planned this year.

O'Connor said Seattle Weekly will publish online only beginning March 1.

Details about the closures are still coming into focus, but Sound Publishing appears to have been considering the plans since at least December, when the Business Journal first inquired about rumored changes at Sound Publishing. O'Connor denied the company was considering closing papers at that time.

Sound Publishing calls itself Washington's largest community media organization and according to its website has 49 newspaper titles, more than 600 employees, a combined print circulation of 661,072 and 2.3 million unique online visitors.

The company's Eastside papers include those in Bellevue, Kirkland and Redmond.
