'Driven by greed': AG Ferguson sues opioid distributors
Attorney GeneralBob Ferguson is suing the three largest distributors of prescription opioids in Washington state, charging they failed to halt suspicious opioid orders and failed to tip off law enforcement.
"These companies had a legal obligation to be a key line of defense against the free flow of opioids. Instead, they were driven by greed," Ferguson said.
The defendants are three Fortune 500 companies -- the McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health and the Amerisource Bergen Drug Corp.
Between 2006 and 2014, claims the state, these firms made billions of dollars, feeding the opioid epidemic by shipping 2 billion pills -- oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodene and other drugs -- into the state. The drugs found their way into the hands of dealers and addicts.
Ferguson claims the companies sent through between 250,000 (conservative estimate) and nearly 1 million suspicious orders.
