Retired Seattle Planning Dept. official ID'd among victims of Saturday's crane collapse
The names of the four people who died Saturday when a crane fell from atop a new Google building in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood were confirmed Monday, and included a college student, two ironworkers and a former longtime city worker.
The ironworkers who died were identified by their unions as Andrew Yoder, of Washington, and Travis Corbet, of Oregon. Seattle Pacific University confirmed over the weekend that freshman student Sarah Wong was among the dead, and on Monday, the King County Medical Examiner announced that Alan Justad, who retired in 2014 as the deputy director of the Department of Planning and Development, was the fourth person killed.
"The City of Seattle family has lost a true public servant," said Mayor Jenny Durkan in a statement about Justad's being among the victims. "So many in Seattle are grieving today as they absorb this terrible news. This accident was tough for so many in our community - from our ironworkers to Seattle Pacific University to the City of Seattle family, and we continue to send our deepest condolences to those who lost ones they knew and loved."
Justad and Wong were in separate cars when the crane fell Saturday afternoon onto Mercer Street, one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. Yoder and Corbet were on the crane, working to disassemble it.
