Seattle ranked the least distracted driving city -- but that doesn't mean it's becoming safer
Seattle was ranked as the least distracted city while driving in 2019, but the percentage of time people looked at their phones grew over the past year.
In 2018, Seattle drivers spent 5.7% of the time driving, using their phones, according to a study by Zendrive that ranked 19 U.S. cities based on how much time drivers spent using their phones.
The percentage jumped up to 7.13% in 2019 for Seattle drivers, but they were still the least distracted. So despite a distracted driving law passed in 2017, the numbers crept steadily up.
But a quick look at the data suggested distracted driving laws help -- to an extent. Out of the top 10 least-distracted cities ranked by the driving analytics company, nine had a ban or a partial ban on hand-held phones while driving. The only city that didn't was Pittsburgh.
