Lacey lets Tim Eyman off with $193 fine for stealing chair

Initiative promoter Tim Eyman will pay the city of Lacey a $193 fine for last winter's theft of a chair from a local Office Depot, after paying in embarrassment and bad publicity after a video of the incident went viral.

Eyman had faced a misdemeanor theft charge, carrying the maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. He had pleaded not guilty, claiming the whole episode as "an honest mistake" and "a misunderstanding."

Under the deal, the theft charge against Eyman will be dismissed if he commits no criminal offense for nine months, and stays away from the Office Dept on Sleater Kinney Road.

Store security cameras rarely yield scintillating material. With Eyman, however, a video showed the initiative kingpin occupying a Brenton Studios Mayhart Chair (valued at $70) in the store vestibule, and then wheeling it out to his car.

if you or I had stolen that chair....

but he is Tim Eyman and all he has to do is be a good boy and stay away from the Office Depot. Are the stopping him from engineering new initiatives? Does he have to give the chair back?

No wonder people have no faith in the justice system.
