WSDOT struggles with tolling troubles in Seattle tunnel
SEATTLE - The Washington State Department of Transportation said it's lost confidence in the company it hired to roll out toll collection in the new state Route 99 tunnel.
"We are not happy about the postponements, but we do want to make sure the system is ready to go before we make the transition," said Jennifer Charlebois, who is the director of systems and engineering for WSDOT's toll division.
But that doesn't mean tunnel toll collection will slip past this fall. WSDOT will start tolling with the current system, which is used on the state's other toll roads.
"That was the reason we had to make the decision to extend our contracts with our existing back office vender a little bit longer especially to make sure we can start tolling on 99 this fall," Charlebois said.
Dallas-based ETAN was supposed to be ready to go last winter but delayed the system several times for testing. So, WSDOT will go with the old system until ETAN is ready.
