Lisa Subeck: My record shows I'll fight for children, families

Voters have a well-defined choice on Aug. 12 for state Assembly in the 78th District on Madison’s far west side. My opponent and I differ on issues: He has supported privatization of public sector jobs, while I am against it. He voted against guaranteed paid sick leave. I have championed it. He supports a multimillion-dollar taxpayer subsidy for the developer of Judge Doyle Square, and I do not.

We also have had very different career paths. I’ve devoted my career to getting things done to improve the lives of women and families and moving the ball forward on voting rights, women’s health and stronger schools. I began my career as a preschool teacher. At the YWCA, I worked to find housing and employment for people who were homeless.

As executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, I helped pass the Healthy Youth Act and contraceptive equity and prescription protection initiatives to expand access to birth control. I fought for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. As executive director of United Wisconsin, I have stood side by side with grass-roots activists for progressive policies including the minimum wage, voting rights, nonpartisan redistricting, and getting big money out of politics...

...Recent cuts to our public schools have been the deepest ever. We need to restore those cuts, reduce class sizes, adequately fund innovative and effective STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) and 4-year-old kindergarten, and support great teachers. College graduates face overwhelming student loan debt. I will fight for funding for the university system and support legislative efforts to help reduce student debt....
