Ron Johnson continues to trail Russ Feingold amid heavy fundraising

On a day when Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson's campaign said it raised more than $2.1 million in the first three months of this year and had a path to victory in November, Democrat Russ Feingold went on the offensive over taxes.
Appearing in Milwaukee, Feingold accused Johnson of "taking a position in the past" of putting the mortgage interest deduction "on the table or on the chopping block, to trade away in order to get other tax cuts."
Tuesday's dueling storylines highlight the stepped-up activity in one of the more important Senate races in the 2016 election cycle. Campaign cash is a big part of the plot and for now Feingold is well ahead.
In a memo, Betsy Ankney, campaign manager for Johnson, said the senator's fundraising total of "over $2.1 million" in the first quarter puts him "within the top six biggest Senate fundraising hauls in the country." Overall, Johnson has raised $8.4 million.
