Being unemployed without an abundance of jobs in my field, I have considered other possibilities. One of them has been state jobs. In January, I took a state exam and got my results. I had a passing score and am ranked 14th. Does this mean that if they would have 14 jobs open that I would get hired? Do they hire strictly by results on those tests or there other factors?
I signed up for another exam for February for a different position. I just wondered if anyone knew how it worked. For neither of these positions did it ask whether I had a pertainent experience.

(10,602 posts)If it works like it did in Colorado they interview the top three for each job until they exhaust the list. One could theoretically be in the top three and be interviewed multiple times and still not get the job. If applicants for a particular classification that is more general like an administrative clerk is given on a periodic basis the following test takers could be added to that list. So you could be 14th on the list and end up 35th based on higher scores on later tests. Some classifications are tested for a particular position and the list expired when the position is filled. Some positions may be promotional positions where a promotional lists exist within a department. Those lists are usually created from test takers within agencies. Some states give military veterans preference points. Some have affirmative action rules.
I have been out of the system in Colorado for 14 years now and I am sure many rules have changed.
Each state has its own rules on how positions are filled. There is a basic philosophy behind civil service but there are many ways to accomplish the goal of filling open positions. It would help to find out what the civil service rules are in Wisconsin. Even though civil service is supposed to eliminate politics when filling positions. It is no a perfect system and political games do happen.
It's just like any other job, there is still an interview, etc.
