Kingston Pen set to close

The federal government is closing down the maximum-security penitentiary in Kingston, Ont., the Regional Treatment Centre located on the grounds of the penitentiary, and the medium-security Leclerc Institution in Laval, Que.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told a press conference Thursday in Ottawa that inmates at the prisons will be moved to other facilities.

He said he expects about 1,000 inmates to be moved, and that a similar number of prison guard jobs will be affected by the closures.

Toews said the facilties are old and "not appropriate" for managing a modern prison population.

So they can fix them the following day. Wonder how thats going to play out. Naturally the provinces won't want to foot the bill for new prisons down the road, so cue the job-creatin' public/private partnership announcement in about 1 years time.
