Landslide risk at record high after months of rain

Official figures have revealed that almost three times the average nmber of rockfalls and landslips have been reported in the past year.

Experts say the rise in incidents, which have damaged roads, property and even cost lives, is due to the high level of rainfall that has swept the country since last summer.

Geologists have warned that they are expecting more large slides over the coming months as further rain causes areas which have already suffered smaller slides to become unstable.

In some cases large cracks have appeared along stretches of coastline as rock and earth has sheered away from the land.
