UK rendition report being unveiled

Government minister Ken Clarke is announcing the outcome of an inquiry into allegations of wrongdoing by the UK's security services.

Retired judge Sir Peter Gibson has been examining claims MI5 and MI6 aided the rendition and ill-treatment of terror suspects in the wake of 9/11.

The Detainee Inquiry will publish its report later.

Former justice secretary Mr Clarke is outlining the findings in a Commons statement from about 11:15 GMT.

Minister without portfolio Ken Clarke announced that a further investigation by a committee of MPs and peers will now be held into areas of concern highlighted by Sir Peter.

Sir Peter told reporters: "It does appear from the documents that the United Kingdom may have been inappropriately involved in some renditions. That is a very serious matter. And no doubt any future inquiry would want to look at that."

In a statement to MPs, Mr Clarke said the guidance for intelligence agencies on detention and torture was "inadequate" in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and "it is now clear that we were in some respects not prepared for the extreme demands suddenly placed on them".

Jack Straw rushed to say it was nothing to do with him, honest.

But at least the UK is willing to admit that there may just possibly sorta-as-if-to-say been some slight irregularities in MI5 and 6. Whereas in the US we're handing out the Medal of Freedom to war criminals.
