Weird thing happening with my processor.

I have an older (2009) ASUS with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300. Running Windows 7. 8 Gb RAM with an SSD Hard Drive.

So, here's the thing. Every once in a while I'll hear the fan kick up a little and when I look at the CPU Usage History in the Task Manager panel it shows the first core running at 100% the other three are just barely in use.

Here's a screen grab from a few minutes ago. The drop off in the memory usage was from me shutting down PhotoShop. So the only application running is Firefox.

Is this something I should be concerned about?
I can do the equivalent of changing the oil in a car, but if this is going to be a transmission job, I need to start saving my pennies.

When this happens next, Click on the Processes tab and sort on the CPU column with greatest at the top. Note the Image Name that is using the most CPU cycles. One of your applications may be checking for an update, windows update may be installing updates, antivirus may be performing a scan. Once you determine which app is acting up, click on the Resource Monitor button.

In Resource Monitor, check the Image name in the CPU section that matches your high CPU Process. You can then see what Disk, Network and Memory activity the app is performing. If you do not recognize the application... run an antivirus/malware scan right away.

Hope this helps!

Not much running in the processes tab. But in the Resource Monitor, found that Roxio was the offending program. I'm gonna uninstall it. I only used a couple times for a DVD project and now use Ashampoo.

Roxio used to crash my old Windows 2000 machine back in the day. Guess it still doesn't like me.

THANKS!!
