AdblockPlus - blocks ads

NoScript - blocks scripts

FlashBlock - blocks flash elements

FEBE - backs up your profile (your bookmarks, extensions, passwords, cookies, themes, etc.)

DownloadHelper - download streaming multimedia (video, audio, etc.)

DownThemAll - download all links from a page (sort of a graphical version of wget)

PearlCrescentPageSaver - capture an entire page as an image -- not just what's currently visible in the window but the entire page

But I wouldn't switch without AdBlock Plus. Now there's AdBlock Plus, I could switch.

I kinda prefer FF's menus, actually, but I guess that's just habit.

It's just eye candy but a neat way to change the look of FF. I made a persona for my clan tartan and that's what I use but there are hundreds out there and really good instructions for easily making your own if you don't see what you like.

rapid release of versions have 3rd party writers of add ons in a catchup mode. Add ons seem to falling behind on updates.

Also FF seems (to me) to no longer like add ons.

just so the add ons will continue to work. I've still lost a few favorites, most notably equake, something that only works on the ancient version I keep for using Tor.

Ghostery sees the invisible web - tags, web bugs, pixels and beacons. Ghostery tracks the trackers and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity.

Ghostery allows you to block scripts from companies that you don't trust, delete local shared objects, and even block images and
iframes. Ghostery puts your web privacy back in your hands.

Control your Privacy at Every Website

Privacy Alerts shows the tracking networks in use at the sites you visit. These tracking networks can track you from site to site as you browse and use the web.

From here you can block web trackers, as well as control how sites can store cookies of all kinds (Browser, Flash, and Silverlight) on your computer.

You can also turn on many other privacy features if you want.

Works as well as Filezilla in the browser.

I love the hiding directory feature in All-in-One-Sidebar - makes a lot of additional screen real estate available for the browser

I like the Download Status Bar for easy tracking/access of downloads

Download Helper is my favorite app for grabbing .flv, .mpeg, mp3 files

I liked Screengrab for taking snapshots of web pages (currently not supported in v. 10, so I use Pixlr Grabber

For customized appearance, I use Shine Bright Skin Aero...I like it's clean layout.

It has been an unstable nightmare. I am 3.6.x. That option has its days numbered.

19. Firefox extension incompatibility has been the big issue
Thu Mar 22, 2012, 12:34 PM
Mar 2012

with the rapid release schedule of Firefox in my experience. Not only has this been an issue for the personal use of Firefox use but also for large deployments of Firefox in organizations. Mozilla has addressed the issue for large organizations back in January with the announcement of the Extended Support Release (ESR). The ESR will only be updated once a year to add new functionality but will get all security updates when they are available. The ESR might be an option for those that don't like the rapid release cycle. Here's the ESR announcement:

https://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2012/01/10/delivering-a-mozilla-firefox-extended-support-release/

More info on the ESR:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/

You can get ESR here:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all.html

I have no affiliation with Mozilla other than as a user. For years I've been using the nightly developmental builds (now version 14.0a1). I have not used the ESR myself but I am suggesting this might be an option for those who don't like the rapid release schedule.

My experience has not been that release versions of Firefox are unstable but rather that extensions and plugins have had issues. Some extensions would not install or were disabled when a Firefox update occurred. This occurred because the acceptable Firefox version numbers written into the code for the already installed extension code (actually an extension configuration file) had not been updated for the particular extension. Extension code writers had to update their extension every 6 weeks and that was extremely frustrating to these people. I *think* this has been addressed by Mozilla but I haven't verified this myself.

Some plugins like Flash have had some version issues as well. In the past couple years I've had several versions of Flash hang the browser, be it Firefox or Chrome. There may be a small flash ad on the page and the browser would freeze. Some people tend to blame the browser for this when in fact it is due, like in this case, to a particular plugin.

Another issue for many users was due to the changes made to Firefox's user interface. When tabs on top came out I was surprised at how many people were complaining. I'm the techy type and I knew the Firefox developers have always tried to provide user control over how the browser is used and displayed when possible. I knew that you could go to View->Toolbars and uncheck Tabs on Top and get the old view back. Many users didn't look to see if they could change the view. Now tabs on top is the default view for the current versions of Internet Explorer and Chrome. Of the 3 browsers (FF, IE, Chrome) Chrome actually came out with tabs on top first. I'm not certain when IE came out with it because I rarely use IE.

I have to worry about 1000-2000 devices that I lose control of, and another 1200 severely locked-down devices that get a new image twice a year. The strategies look like they could accommodate both.

I will definitely look into this!

Let's you override CSS for websites. On DU3, I'm using it to hide signatures, add a rounded border to excerpts, change the color of the Last edited text and moved it to the right hand side of the post, etc.
