followup question on phone matter

A few months ago I sought the advice of this group on ways to preserve my old text messages on a phone that needs upgrading. Hadn't done anything yet -- it all seems over my pay grade.

Today I bought a micro SD card and adapter. I was told at the store that the adapter would allow me to plug the memory card into the laptop, and then store and/or print the text messages.

However.

Now I realize that the text messages are in the phone's original memory and not (of course) in the new SD chip and so my problem is not addressed. Someone told me that it may be possible to move the old texts to the new chip. Does that make any sense? And how would that be done?

I have a lot of fear about losing these old texts, which are very meaningful to me.

Thanks in advance.
