Anyone here have any experience with Starlink residential service?

I've been on the waiting list since 2021. They're now offering me a "best effort" option in my area to bandaid their slow rollout.

I currently have no viable options beyond a DSL 6/.5 copper line service where this home is located. Beyond that there's point of sight, which hasn't worked out as well for me as the DSL. Hughsnet is a bane of many here and I'm not even vaguely interested.

I'm extremely tempted to try Starlink, even in their "best effort" mode. Just for the hope of something better. Even if only a part of the day. It would be nice to be able to avail myself of telemedicine and other such modern advantages.

Beyond it's association with Musk, any one know any verified pros and cons I can explore?

The equipment is expensive, but monthly it's about what I pay now for my service. So, that part, if it works, isn't a deal breaker. I'm nervous about setting it up. I'm not tech ignorant, but I've never set up something like this either. Which is another consideration.

I realize this isn't necessarily computer help, but I trust the people here more than most places. Anyone have any input here?

We have good line of sight.

Musk wasnt overtly a jerk back then. I would change it for that reason jf I could.

Man, I hear you on the Musk thing. If I had another option, or even just one coming down in a year or so, I'd never consider it. I just don't. Which is why I am considering it, but still on the fence.

My view of the sky is completely unobstructed from my house. Is that what it requires?

We used to have Hughesnet which was a lot better then dial-up like we used to have but Starlink has been so much better.
One of the reason we decided to get Starlink was that we could install it ourselves with out having to have an installer come in and install it.
The speed is is very fast and we have had very few outages or really any problems at all.
The cost is about what we would pay for Hughesnet.

Reddit has a very good forum all about Starlink where you can find a lot of information.

Was the install complicated or no more painful than a standard IKEA piece of furniture?

Thank you for the Reddit link. I'll read there, too.
