Need recommendations for wireless router

My Belkin router wireless capability bit the dust. Can anyone recommend a fast, reliable wireless router for about $100?

5. Linksys EA 2700

Picked one up for about $100. Fast, quick install. Got configured and running in 10 minutes. Much greater range than my old Netgear router. Much faster wireless speed. Running WPA2 security with no issues. I'm pretty happy with it.

7. How long have you had it?

The problem is with every, and I do mean every, router the reviews are all over the place. So I'd prefer your recommendation over CNET or Amazon reviews.

I don't understand how every single router gets a 5 - greatest router ever reviews and 1 - worst ever router reviews. Makes me think somebody is getting paid for either good or bad reviews or both.

It's not just counting heads, but also weighing them, at least with technical reviews. For most folks if the router sets up easy and the WPA is straightforward, they'll give it five stars. Some folks need more complicated services like port forwarding. Some of us (like me) have even been dumb enough to try sub-netting with $40 netgear.

but it's hard to weigh them when you don't know the reviewers. Some say they are experts but they sure don't sound like experts.

I don't need to run the world with a wireless router....just need to be able to access it from 2 computers and a Kindle. Setting up the printer might be nice but is not a necessity.

...assigned is not so helpful as the pros and cons mentioned in the review. As you have implied, if you can find some reviews with enough written about the item, they tend to indicate the reviewer's level of knowledge. I have a printer configured on my network.

Many routers offer the ability to share a USB connected printer with the PCs on the LAN. I haven't tried this. My printer is connected via Ethernet. One helpful hint I can offer is if you also decide to connect by Ethernet add a reservation for the printer's IP address to the router's LAN address reservation table. This is if you choose to use DHCP.

The drawbacks are no gigabit and no wireless N.

14. some of those "expert" reviewers are highly suspect as to any ability.

There was one once on a motherboard where the reviewer sent it back 3 times for DOA-wouldn't POST. He said he would never buy a POS from that company again.
Said in the description and on a bright orange sticker on the stacic bag seal that "This board is shipped with the CMOS jumper in the Clear position. Please move to Normal before applying power" DUH!!
I bought 4 of those boards and every one of them worked fine with the jumper in the proper position. I did forget on one but it took about 5 seconds for me to figure it out.

11. Had it for 4 months

No problems setting up desktop computers, Laptops, Surfaces, Home Servers, netbooks, printer/Fax/Scanners, Windows 7.5 Phones, Xbox 360 and other devices with everything from a bastardized distribution of Linux to Windows 8 Enterprise.

WPA-2 Encryption was easy. Port forwarding to our Home server was easy. Setting up a DMZ for a hosted website was easy.I like the features for a guest network that is firewalled from my home network, but 2.4 Ghz, not the home network 5Ghz, is pretty cool.

Throughput is great, epecially for wired connections, thanks to the Gigabit Ethernet ports. Coverage throughout our house has been much better than the old Netgear router we had. Had been contempating repeaters or WAPs before getting this router. It's been flawless so far. Any problems we've encountered have either been the modem or Comcast.

13. the only router I ever had a problem with was a Belkin.

It absolutely refused to see my VOIP box. Even after talking with their support for an hour it would work right. The best was it would ring in but couldn't dial out.
Went and got a Netgear and no problems with anything. did the onscreen setup and everything communicated at once.
