2. Have you by any chance been getting messages from Avast lately saying

your free trial is about to run out? I have, and I get the same error message for Truthdig as you did as well as this page popping up when I clicked for more information:

avast! saved your computer from crashing

You just dodged a bullet

You may be wondering how you ended up with a virus, especially if you were visiting a ‘normal’ site. The latest research from the avast! Virus Lab shows that more than 80% of malware (viruses, spyware, and the like) spreads through legitimate websites, with only 1% coming from suspicious or ‘dodgy’ sites.
Good thing avast! had your back.

You can increase your security

Upgrade to maximum protection - avast! Internet Security

I've never had it happen to me before I started getting all the notices to upgrade to the paid version, I don't know if it's related or not. Seems kinda weird though.

If you go into - Web Shield - Settings - Exclusions - you can bypass it by entering in the Truthdig address and ignoring the popups.

on edit: ok, well it still sucks because you can't open the links without doing the same for each.

7. I've used Avast on my friends' and family's computers for ages (I use Linux personally), but...

...Avast has gone off the rails lately. Don't know if they changed ownership or what, but they've become much more intrusive and even dishonest (e.g. showing a positive on a harmless site just to try to sell you an upgrade).

I'd recommend going with Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG. Avast was once the best, but now it's just another piece of intrusive crap.

That's what I was afraid of. I had planned on buying the upgraded version when my time ran out but didn't want to do it just at this moment ... I don't like having my browser hijacked on purpose or otherwise. So, avast is gone, and AVG seems to be working great

It opened the page and this popped up again. I held the cursor over the URL of the object it blocked:

I have the paid version of AVAST.

Well that shoots my theory all to heck, I thought maybe they were hijacking me to upgrade ... there must be something else. I can't afford extras right now so have just dumped avast and installed avg ... the Truthdig site is working fine for me now. I really liked avast though, hope you can get to the bottom of it.

Then they can do their own investigation and possibly confirm your findings. I did that online scanner on them, but I'm open to the possibility it wasn't thorough enough.
