Gmail User Tip to Avoid Spam

This is a copy and paste from Reddit and thought I'd share:

Say your email is example@gmail.com[1] . If you put a + after your name, you can tag it for the account you created. example+spam@gmail.com[2] is the same email as example+reddit@gmail.com[3] and example@gmail.com[4] . This will essentially "tag" your email so that when you check your email, anything sent to example+whatever@gmail.com[5] will allow you to pinpoint where you submitted your email and also allow you to quickly label all messages sent to that address. If you suspect your email may be put on a list and sold, you can use this tip to take preventive measures to avoid spam... not that Gmail doesn't have decent spam filters already.

Also, I'm told that this will work with any email account, but I can't verify.

... lots of sites will flag a plus sign as an invalid character when you try to submit it as your email address.

I used to do this. It does work as long as your email provider is using a standard UNIX email server and as long as the places that you are giving away your email address allow the plus sign. Ultimately, I found that this was not worth the effort, and that there are much better ways to filter your email.
