Are these speed test #s really bad, what to do: PING 27, Download 2.98, Upload .31

Been having lots of problems with "Website not responding, Recover web page?" and forever stoppages of YouTube videos. I'm DSL with a local provider. Just called them to check or punch up the connection (they haven't called back yet).

Did a speed test. Are those numbers really bad? What can be done?

By American standards, not bad, but in Europe or Asia you'd be on the equivalent of dial-up. Scuba Jan 2014 #1

I'm out in the boonies on an RF network. No cable my way.

I usually get between 5 and 6 upload and I'm not on DSL. Have you tried resetting the modem?

edit: ran it just now a few times... 2.5 and 4.

how far out in the boonies you are. If it's entry level DSL those numbers aren't too bad at all. If you're way out in the woods, those numbers are phenomenal. Your ping time is good no matter where you are and what you're paying for.

Edited to add: Of course if you're sitting in the middle of a major city while paying premium rates for top tier internet and you're getting those numbers, I think you might be justified in pummeling someone about the head and shoulders.

on her machine, she's got a cable hookup, and her numbers were 41, 3.25, and 1.07, which even if I don't know what things mean, sound very good next to mine.

As for the problems I'm having, I've done a virus check (no viruses) and was going to do a defrag but the Windows analyzer said a defrag isn't needed. And the provider hasn't called back.

At work we have our own fiber

Ping time (outside the network) depends on server, generally 12ms or less
down 50 mbps, or whatever the server will allow
up 50 mbps, or whatever the server will allow

And I helped build it!
;-D

at home it's 15 down and 1.5 up. I can't complain, except when everyone in the neighborhood jumps on the 'Net, and the concentrator gets filled up, it goes down to 8 or 10 down.
Sometimes I want to strangle the cable company.

If you're paying for 3 mbps, that's damn good. If you're paying for 6, then it's piss poor.

You need to know what they should be providing you with before you can figure out what percentage of that you are getting.
