Why is my iPhone so hot?

Ok, I have a relic. It's an iPhone 5 and it has served me well. I am recharging it on an Amtrak train back to Boston, but I just pulled it out of my bag and it's very hot. I have never experienced that before. Is this something that I should be worried about?

1. Could be at the end of its life span older batteries generate more heat while charging, but

didn't apple offer to replace these for free?

It is relative easy to replace these yourself and you can get a kit with the tools on youtube

4. Honestly, I don't think I have ever replaced the batteries and I have had it for about 5 years.

2. If you have it in a protective case, take it out.

They make it harder for it to disapate heat. Personally, I wouldn't have it in a bag while it's charging.

6. I just have a little cosmetic protective case around the back.

Haven't cracked the screen once in 5 years! I'm pretty proud of that. But maybe it's time for some maintenance or an upgrade.

3. your battery could be on its way out.

there are free apps to check the remaining life of your battery.

i use one called "battery life".

10. You're phone is working hard.

Check "Settings">"Battery". If anything is using up more than 18% - 20% battery, that is the culprit.

12. Your iPhone is searching for networks (cell towers)...

... because you are on a train... That process uses power and will cause the iPhone to get warm, especially if it's charging.
