Linux Mint - Sound quality

Anyone have any ideas to tweak sound quality? I dropped to the console and alsamixer but it still is rather weak even jacking them up to 100. I have a sound card, but it doesn't have drivers for linux (oxygen 8788 chipset) so I'm trying to make the on board sound okay.

Suggestions? My onboard is a realtek on a high-end MB with SLI, Intel, obviously.

I would rather use my high end sound card, so if anyone knows where I can get a package for the a Razer Barracuda AC-1 that would be better!

I'm running Mint x64

3.13.0-24-generic kernel

I was having a similar problem until I replaced pulse with jackd.

The sound card was crapping out on me, and finally got static and joined the silicon valley in the sky. I have a new card with the same chipset and it works great. Mine was around 6 or 7 years old. It finally croaked.

Well, that and kernel issues, but mostly the card was just flaky enough for me to think I had fixed it, then it would flake out again.
