I am not a programmer, and I've only read "Black Box Voting" once, seeing that this book would not be an answer.

However, I've just run a campaign for re-election with districts where the numbers don't make sense. Yes, I and others who were one one side of a huge issue here lost. This would have effected the outcome, which might have made sense, but not in the fashion that I and others lost. We vote electronically here (iVotronics), and I'm wondering how traceable any tampering is? If you need more information, or I need to go elsewhere, please advise.

1. Document everything you can right now

and contact your ...county? ...city? ...state....registrar or whatever the person in charge of voting is called, so that you have the time element on your side. There probably is a time window for registering complaints.
Then get a few smart folks on board and list the ways the results do not make sense, so when you meet with the registrar person
you will have some talking points.
Also, there is or has to be a Voter Watch org. online....there ARE several groups online supporting fair elections..get someone to talk
with them about your suspicions, they should have ideas...oh, yeah...Brad Blog....check that out.
And remember you have a 3 day weekend coming up.

Yes, we do have a 3 week window, and what I've planned to do is to obtain the information as described. Persons will join me who are savvy. I think we have to ask for this information as a group of candidates and I know it's at the county level where we start.

I'm glad you called out the task of getting in touch with something like voter watch, et al. That's a good place to talk about HOW likely it is to have this happen. The main question is evidence elsewhere when one examines the electronic trick of flipping numbers.

It's the tampering question I'm wondering about. I'm willing to concede if I lost if it's a fair loss.

2. That's a really, REALLY broad question

The only sane answer is It depends. If there is a paper trail then the election should be able to be audited.

At this point you don't need a programmer, but rather a statistician and perhaps a lawyer. You will need a catalog of all the way the numbers are funny.

As to how it was done, the machines will have to be submitted to someone who is accepted in a forensic environment, this is a crime and evidence needs to be collected. How traceable any tampering is depends on the skills of the person doing the tampering. The immediate goal is to secure the machines for inspection. The path to that I suspect is through the courts.

I don't know. Allegheny Co. Pa? I'm in Frederick Md. Md uses Diebold without a paper trail. Audits are not possible here
