A Berklee Christmas carol flash mob at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts

Visitors of the Museum of Fine Arts were treated to an impromptu performance of "O Holy Night" by Berklee students and Boston musicians on Saturday, December 14.

SNIP:

Students Evan Chapman and Josh Knowles came up with the idea a few months ago. The pair were brainstorming ways to share music outside of Berklee's community, said Chapman, who graduates Thursday.

"Three weeks before the flash mob I was visiting the MFA and was taken aback by the room and was inspired by the space and felt it would be a perfect location to share one of my arrangements," he said.

The choir rehearsed twice together and then the whole group, including strings and singer Mark Joseph, a 20-year-old Berklee student, practiced together on Friday.

Faculty and Alumnus Play for Obama at Inauguration Events

Two Berklee professors provided the Latin rhythm behind Cuban bandleader Paquito D'Rivera at a special private concert for Barack Obama, his family, and other special guests. The setting was an indoor barbecue on Sunday, January 19 in Washington D.C. The Paquito D'Rivera band features Berklee professors Oscar Stagnaro on bass and Mark Walker on percussion.

D'Rivera and company were invited to perform for the President-elect at the storied Blair House, located across from the White House and used as the President's official guest quarters since 1942.

Walker told the Boston Globe that the group performed "So What" for President-elect Obama after learning that he is a Miles Davis fan.

The following evening, Stagnaro and Walker performed with D'Rivera at the Kennedy Center honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, in the all-star concert A Celebration of America, hosted by Wynton Marsalis and the former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Also on the bill were Berklee student and sax player Grace Kelly, along with Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance, Bela Fleck, and Dave Brubeck.

Amazing young man. Berklee is an awesome school. So sweet a song for the season. Simply beautiful.

The MFA is wonderful. So full of art and history.

The MFA. The green tree you see is part of the Chihuly exhibit. My sister took me last year. It was magical. We ate in that courtyard after the visit. It was amazing.

Some pics~

Many of his inspirations come from this area, as you can see in the article there. We have a strong fine arts community. In my city, works by artists are mandated in public areas.

Thanks for the beautiful glass pictures and the story of Berklee. And another Xmas flash mob for the evening:

See the joy of the children! Wish I could have been there. I love classical music, always have.

To hear it or see a play in the open air is great. Never made it to the open air Shakespeare theatre in Ashland, OR, although I've seen plays outdoors before.

Night!!!

Chihuly is all about energy and freedom and exploration. He's all about innovation in glass. He leaves symmetry at the door and lets gravity out to play. He challenges the glass, putting images on it to see how they distort, allowing it to flow to see how it will bend and fall, and blowing it to its limits to see just how thin he can make it. Chihuly Garden and Glass plays homage to the remarkably inspired work of a man who simply doesn't believe in limitations in glass, in art, in beauty.

It looks and sounds enchanting. I read about his background at the exhibition, his schooling at RISD. However, I never knew of the garden in Seattle. I would make it a first priority when I visit Seattle. Thanks for sharing this.

I love the flash mob and Ode an die Freude, such joy!

Beautiful, freshwest. Simply beautiful~

What a precious gift from Evan Chapman, Josh Knowles, and the Berklee School of Music. Thank you for your wonderful thread telling all about the School and its history.. and, they played at the Inauguration for President Obama!

"Berklee College of Music is a nonprofit, coeducational institution of higher learning incorporated under the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students and to train veterans under the G.I. Bill of Rights."

Amazing! I've heard about Berklee for a long time from young people in different parts of the country who either were going there or wanted to. When I first heard about it I thought he said he wanted to go to "Berkley" until he explained that it was a School for Music in Boston.

Merry Christmas to you, she~
