Barack Obama
Related: About this forum"Hey, mister, wait a minute!"
I'm three or four houses down the road from his door by then
"Can you come back?"
I shout back that I'm returning, and I trudge to his door a second time. He apologizes. I tell him it's no problem and ask what I can do for him. It's his eighty year old mother, who hasn't voted since she was in her twenties. She would have dropped off the election rolls long ago, but I'm happy to register her again. He invites me inside
"Can I register?" she wants to know. Indeed she can! I start running through the questions: Are you a US citizen? Are you at least eighteen years of age?
She tells me she's seventeen, but quickly reconsiders: No, I'm actually thirty! So when she gives me her birth date, I point out that's the year my mother was born. Finally, she tires of standing and sits down. The registration goes quickly: I done a lot of them and can do them fast. She examines the form very carefully and then signs. She wants to know if her signature is alright: I assure her it is
Her son and his wife chat with me a bit about 2012, and then I'm back on the street
It's been a fun day: all the voters I registered today told me at first they didn't want to register -- and then changed their minds
