Barack Obama
Related: About this forumFive years ago this very night
Five years ago today, Barack Obama announced he was running for President. This was after almost six months of us begging wheedling, cajoling and conferencing almost nightly because there was this huge portion of the party ( we called ourselves "progressives" - imagine!) that knew that if Hillary was the nominee, she would lose. Not because of her. Hillary is a great candidate. It was her people. Every sad sack loser who articulated the flawed race from Kerry's Campaign, all the worst inside the beltway bubble people were signed up. From strategists to consultants , they were ALL there. They knew how to lose, gracefully.
That was our fear, and so we embarked on this quixotic mission to convince Barack Obama that despite his careful plans, NOW was his time, it was HISTORY calling, and he had better understand this. After weeks of conference calls,, we made our case to him. "I don't know. I just don't think you're right, guys" he stated flatly. 45 minutes of talk later, he reluctantly agreed to establish an exploratory committee. A specific group of Chicago people was assigned to lobby Michelle. I think that might have done it. You could feel the momentum building, and it resulted in this night. My phone started ringing off the hook. It was every one of Hillie's supporters in LA. I had fought many battles with them over the years. "You'll tear us apart! You can't be serious! You can't possibly win!" My answer was the same to all. "Let us do this, what's the harm? We just feel like there has to be an answer to Mark Penns people". Patti Solis was livid with us. She's a good lady and I wish her well. Arianna was visibly ticked off. But none of that mattered; we had an election to win. I still have my Hillary 2008 Lapel Pin. Truly, I love that lady.

(4,309 posts)I admire Hillary Clinton greatly and supported her, but I am so happy that the candidate, election winner and President is Barack Obama! What a relief and breath of fresh air after 8 years of Bush, Inc.!

And I read an "analysis" in the Wash Post the other day saying how frontrunners have always stumbled at this point in their campaigns. They talked about McCain, Rmoney, W and a few other folks and they mentioned Hillary beating Obama a couple of times during this point in the race.
But the thing was -- Obama was NEVER the front runner. Hillary was always the one to beat (which I think is why to this day so many of her supporters have still not gotten over the fact that she WAS beaten). I remember not even black people as a whole were supporting Obama because many were convinced this country was still too racist and too prejudiced to elect a big eared black guy whose middle name was freaking HUSSEIN while we were still fighting the war in Iraq.
When it dawned that this dude may have even the slightest bit of a chance, my how quickly things changed. And it looks as though we may have you, Cap'n to thank in some way for that. So thank you. Thank you very, very much.
