Ellison Wins National Title as ‘Progressive House Hero’

With Title, Ellison receives final House endorsement from Democracy for America
Burlington, VT – Today, Democracy for America (DFA) announced that Rep. Keith Ellison, a Minnesota Democrat, won the organizations’ final endorsement and title as the Nation’s Progressive House Hero. The Minnesota Representative squeaked out a win over Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, for the title through the organization’s month-long contest with its membership.
“Keith is a progressive leader of courage and principle,” Jim Dean, Chair of Democracy for America said. “As a member of the Progressive Congress, he pushes the democratic party day-in and day-out to be more progressive. I’m proud that our membership understands the unique voice and perspective that Rep. Ellison brings to Washington.”
"I’m honored to receive the Progressive House Hero award as well as the endorsement of Democracy for America,” Rep. Ellison said as he accepted the endorsement and title. “To everyone who voted for me in DFA’s big contest, I’d like to extend my thanks and gratitude. I’m humbled by the incredible show of support for the values that I represent in Congress every day, like making sure that everybody counts and everybody matters."
The organization held a contest for its membership from September 10th through October 1st with the majority of votes supporting Rep. Ellison. Democracy for America asked its national membership to choose its favorite imcumbent progressive hero and in the final week, Rep. Ellison came from behind to beat Rep. Grijalva. Senator Sherrod Brown won Progressive Hero in the Senate while Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan were chosen as DFA’s member’s congressional villains for 2012.
