(24,633 posts)That said, I don't think we can afford to lose any sitting Senator from the Senate at this time. they're needed to insure that we retake the Senate. And Brown has said he's not interested in the VP slot.
So, I'd say go with a governor...or maybe Russ Feingold as an outside chance.
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,961 posts)Not my pick but an observation: Sanders would be a safe Senate pick inasmuch as Vermont has a Democratic Governor to appoint his replacement.
stopbush
(24,633 posts)He's basically confirmed the worst fears people had about him.
And he's not going to deliver any more votes: 75% of his supporters say they'll support Hillary in the GE. Those that won't vote for her will consider Sanders a sell out if he accepts the VP slot.
Hillary needs to balance the ticket and try to secure a swing state in the process.
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,961 posts)Now he is a non-starter. Brown fits that description; so does SecAg Vilsack.
SharonClark
(10,374 posts)I wondered about him and what he would bring to the ticket.
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,961 posts)I'm concerned about Iowa given their election of Joni Ernst to the Senate.
I'm less concerned about Minnesota, but he could be helpful. It wasn't that long ago when we did well in Montana and North Dakota.
Farmers and ranchers I meet tend to be highly conservative. However, they also vote self-interest and they are a lot more inclined to listen to someone who knows Ag.
SaschaHM
(2,897 posts)would effectively hand that seat over to the republicans. Kasich gets to set the election date and unless Brown bets it all and resigns, it's definitely going to be at some obscure date to minimize democratic turnout.

(61,000 posts)I feel he we need him worse in the Senate at this point in time. He is a great Senator and serves the people of this country very well.
Proud that he is my Senator.

Really leaning toward Brown from swing state Ohio, bring more votes.
Would like to see Sanders because of his message too.

(3,316 posts)And I'd have to say the same thing about Castro; both have been mayors of major cities; Castro is HUD secretary and Gavin is lt gov
I would rather see someone with more experience but on the other hand since Hillary has so much experience maybe we could get her younger person like Castro or Gavin

He's the Latino Barack Obama.
With Julian Castro on the ticket as VP running mate, we are ensured the Latino vote for decades to come - and we need them.
workinclasszero
(28,270 posts)The party needs to look to the future with a young Latino like Mr Castro
RussBLib
(9,742 posts)That's embarrassing, to me. Julian and his brother both obviously look Latino, but they didn't grow up speaking Spanish and are pretty late to the party. To me, a Latino needs to be able to speak fluent Spanish if they will be expected to win the Latino vote.
Picky picky picky
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)He's also fluent in Latin and Japanese, so I don't think mastering the Spanish language will be all too hard for him.
From HuffPo 2012:
Unlike Castro, however, Rubio is fluent in Spanish, as evidenced by an interview he gave Telemundo last year.
While the comparison is an obvious one, the implication about Castros lack of speaking skills is a bit overblown. According to the same The New York Times magazines 2010 profile story of Castro in which he admitted he didnt really speak the language, Castro was also receiving Spanish tutoring at the time (whether he obtained fluency is unknown).

(15,438 posts)panicked and said on CNN this morning that choosing Julian Castro as Hillary's running mate is a "cynical move" and that if Cruz is the nominee, it would negate Julian's effectiveness as a running mate who can draw the Latino vote. Yeah, right. Cubans are not beloved by the larger Hispanic community. In fact, the vast majority of Hispanics can't stand Cubans, so no, Jamie, a Cruz nomination (which ain't gonna happen) would NOT negate Julian Castro's power to draw the Hispanic vote one bit.
For those who don't know, The Daily Caller is also known as The Daily Howler - a RW-rag cut from the same cloth as Breitbart.com, and Jamie Weinstein is its most prominent editors.
So when you have a GOTPer panicking at the prospect of Julian Castro on the ticket with Hillary Clinton, we should go with that choice.

SaschaHM
(2,897 posts)Julian Castro or Al Franken. Franken because he is a progressive Senator from a blue state with a democratic governor. That's key to keeping the Senate and not reaping it of talent. I also think the VP needs to be young enough that he can conceivably run in 2024. The VP spot is a great way to boost some new talent.

(68,780 posts)If Hillary Clinton runs against Donald Trump, which looks to be the case, she will win easily.
If Julian Castro is her running mate, she will win in a landslide.
Trump would have to build a city's worth of Dubai-scale skyscrapers to compensate for his shame and humiliation. I'd sell tickets to that.

(10,297 posts)I occasionally make snarky comments in the Bernie Group. Treat me or another ugly and I will ask the host to hide your comment. You have to develop a pattern of ugliness to be hidden. Then, the host will ban you. I'm watching you! Is it worth it? It's more fun play in the Bernie Group than being banned.

(1,079 posts)Debbie Wasserman-Schultz! But I could definitely see her choosing DWS.
I would have a very hard time voting for that ticket. So would any Sanders supporter IMO.
I voted for Elizabeth Warren. She gives that added benefits that it would energize the hell out of Sanders supporters and also the 'Pubs won't dare try to gin up something to impeach HRC over. Warren taking over would be their corporate buddies' worst nightmare.
I could see Claire McCaskill as the pick. Would Bill Richardson make sense? He is (or was?) tight with the Clintons. Hispanic and from the southwest, where we could use the help.
Algernon Moncrieff
(5,961 posts)Claire McCaskill: I like her as a pick inasmuch as she could help tip Missouri (which barely went red in the last two elections) into our column. However, the Sanders supporters would scream "Third Way" at the top of their lungs.
Bill Richardson: I liked Bill in 2008. However, United States of America v. Carollo, Goldberg and Grimm would be brought up. Hillary doesn't need that kind of baggage coming into the campaign.

(10,374 posts)I'll be blunt...It would be hard for some people to get past the name and he looks too young.

(9,763 posts)I think he needs a few more years to season. Given her age (sorry) she needs a Veep who can hit the ground running if need be.
I like the Al Franken idea. He's pretty "left" and will appease most Bernistas IMO. Plus we wouldn't lose the Senate seat in deep blue Minnesota.

(28,826 posts)Very strong on the environment, brings in another region (PNW has not been represented much nationally), will appeal to tech workers, caucus state that Sanders won. And the governorship would be safe - Washington is unlikely to elect a Republican governor (the last few candidates they tried were off the charts terrible).

(31,170 posts)but right now I like Inslee a lot.
Like Sherrod Brown a lot too.
I wish Castro had a bit more depth of experience, but wouldnt be crushed if he was the choice.
Like Booker
Think Warren is best in the Senate.
I've been looking to the West, NW to see who had strong experience in one of Hillary's key areas of interest, such as energy, health care, infrastructure, etc.
question everything
(49,274 posts)but she needs someone younger, from the next generation
Thus Biden, Sanders, Brown and Warren are out.
Deval Patrick I've heard now works with investment bankers so.... bad optics. Though I really liked him.
Cuomo is... not his father. I don't think he can light a fire.
I like O'Malley because he is a former governor. Same with Dan Malloy - CT gov.
Oh, and of course, HUD secretary Julian Castro will be a good candidate, too.
I like Cory Booker but I am not sure he has a family and our electorate still like to see a ma and pa a kid or two and a dog (or a cat)

(5,125 posts)I picked Castro. He is well liked, young, and up and coming in the party. Sherrod Brown has some things in his past that would tank that ticket, regardless of how good a senator he is for OH, and he is a GREAT senator.
