In the coming hours and days, we’ll learn about the victims of this tragedy. Their names. Their faces. Who they were. The joy that they brought to families and to friends, and the difference that they made in this world. Say a prayer for them and say a prayer for their families -- that God give them the strength to bear the unbearable. And that He give us all the strength to be there for them, and the strength and courage to change. We need to demonstrate that we are defined more -- as a country -- by the way they lived their lives than by the hate of the man who took them from us.

Organizations supporting equality stood in solidarity on Sunday, filling the airwaves with profound statements of shock and heartache at the shooting at an LGBT nightclub Pulse in Orlando early that morning.

“While the crime has not yet been labeled a hate crime, more than 20 percent of hate crimes reported nationally in 2014 targeted people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, according to the most recent FBI statistics available,” The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) said in a statement.

“Hate crimes based on sexual orientation currently account for 22 percent of all hate crimes in Florida, according to a report by Equality Florida, trailing only race as the most common

motivation. As a percentage of the state population, LGBTQ Floridians are at the highest risk of being targeted with a hate crime. Florida law provides increased penalties for hate crimes based on sexual orientation.”

Chad Griffin, president of the HRC, appeared along with Mara Keisling, Executive Director, National Center for Transgender Equality, Janet Murguía, President and CEO, National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Cornell Brooks, President, NAACP and Sharon Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director, National Black Justice Coalition to denounce the violence and demand the incident be labeled as a hate crime.

ORLANDO -- When Omar Mateen opened fire with his military style AR-15 assault rifle on a gay nightclub in Orlando, there was one man who recognized the sound, a war veteran.

Imran Yousuf, a bouncer at the Pulse nightclub, never saw the gunman in the early Sunday morning hours. Right after last call, he was making his rounds, and barely missed coming face-to-face with Mateen

Yousuf, a 24-year-old Hindu, served as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan. On Saturday night, the combat zone followed him to Orlando.

He ended up saving dozens of lives

43. My daughter and her girlfriend

were shouted at "stop shoving it in our faces, this is why people kill you". They were holding hands on the way to a candlelight vigil to remember Orlando in Youngstown Ohio. Our entire family went. It was on local news. My daughter carried a sign that said our love will overcome your hate and your guns.Her girlfriend carried a sign with all the names of the Orlando victims. They made the signs themselves. I am very proud of my daughter and her lovely girlfriend, but I am also terrified. I fear for their safety.

And thanks for the picture of Orlando. Love will win in the end. But as a Mom, I am terrified one of these haters will hurt my girl or her girlfriend. She is very brave...puts stickers on her car...refuses to live in fear. She was at pride in Pittsburgh when we learned of Orlando.
