My Turn: Progress is a marathon, not a presidential race Concord Monitor

I say surprised because Secretary Clinton is waging a very different kind of campaign than the one that, frankly, didn’t impress me a whole lot eight years ago. It’s responsive, nimble and forward looking. On the stump in the Granite State, she’s shown a warmth and intelligence that speaks deeply to her formidable experience in public life. This approach has already borne fruit: thanks to prioritizing her time with a grandmother in Keene instead of with a process-obsessed national media, she learned about New Hampshire’s opioid crisis firsthand and has successfully moved that critical issue into the national discussion. As for the candidate herself, whether it’s boldness on campaign finance reform, renewable energy, and voting rights, or just plain common sense on guns, education, or Social Security, she tacked to the left on issues well before our good neighbor from Vermont got into the race.

Yet while Hillary Clinton’s progressive policy positions have unexpectedly won over my heart, it’s my head that is really excited about what her candidacy may mean for our nation’s future. Since the rise of unlimited dark money in our politics, and especially since the anti-democratic gerrymandering that occurred after the 2010 elections nationally and in New Hampshire, government has become increasingly divorced from public will. The textbook example of this to me is how my senator, Kelly Ayotte, blocked a vote on a bill to strengthen background checks for firearms, something that multiple polls showed her constituents supported overwhelmingly.

The woman has done everything but be president. I can think of no one more qualified. I would also drink a beer with her since that seems to have become a deciding factor on who to vote for.
