ORANGEBURG, S.C. Hillary Clinton called for lowering the federal restrictions on marijuana research at a town hall meeting Saturday on the campus of Claflin University, a historically black university.
The Democratic presidential front-runner called for reclassifying the drug from Schedule 1, the most restrictive class that includes heroin, to Schedule 2.
"I do support the use of medical marijuana," she said. "And I think even there we need to do a lot more research so that we know exactly how we're going to help people for whom medical marijuana provides relief."
"I want to move from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 so researchers can research what's the best way to use it, dosage, how does it work with other medications," she added.

(9,494 posts)most Democrats believe, it's her policy announcements that matter because she is the likely nominee. Bernie can rush around trying to be first but that and $5 will get him an iced mocha chino.
Hillary will roll out her platform in her own time. She'll still be doing it long after Bernie goes home to Vermont.

(1,662 posts)Completing removing the plant from federal drug regulation and regulating it like alcohol and allowing it to be regulated by the states. Bernies is yet again on the correct side of the debate.
Hillary wants to keep the for profit prisons in business and wants to keep violating the rights of peaceful citizens possessing a plant. Cocaine is a schedule 2 drug and prison is still the result of possession.
Terrorizing peaceful citizens for possessing a plant can no longer be justified. Taking away peoples right to prosperity and self determination and freedom can no longer be justified. What plants people grow and use peacefully in their own home is no business of the government. There is no right more important than the right to grow your own food and medicine.
We know it is not a deadly plant. We know the effects. We know the dangers. The vast majority of MJ users have never broken another law on their life. They are hard working average citizens that chose this plant as a means to relax, unwind, destress, relieve pain, heal illnesses, it is a natural herb as should truly be regulated as many other natural herbs and sold over the counter at health food stores.

Arent we tired of being terrorized over a plant?
The most deadly part of this plant are the laws against it. More people have died because of MJ prohibition then all OD drug deaths ever and not a single one has been a MJ OD.
If Hillary really cared about the safety and well being of our citizens she would advocate legalizing this plant now. Not tomorrow not in 15 years now. So many lives have already be ruined and lost because of their laws.

(47,151 posts)Her approach does. I have zero problem with her position in this context. I would also point out that she has detailed her plans for reducing incarceration of citizens, you might be interested in that as well.

(1,662 posts)The majority of citizens already support legalization. Yet again Hillary is not enough action and to much of the same.
She doesnt care about the health and safety of our citizens if she thinks locking them in jail just because they were peacefully possessing a plant is a good idea.
The only thing that keeps MJ illegal is the money.

(9,494 posts)Libertarians would bloviate about making pot free and legal before a national election. This is the same thing the progressives on this site were expecting from Barack Obama in 2008. The impossible.
It's not just money. If most Americans don't want it, you have to wait until more do and the votes are available in both houses. Bernie is the last person in the world to be able to get enough votes to do anything in Congress or the Senate. His own friends aren't even endorsing him.
I would be for full legalization of pot and I have felt that way for 45 years. But, so far, I haven't been able to convince the people who make laws, make it happen. Neither has Bernie!
