Gay marriage is a "machination of the Father of Lies." "Adoption by gay people is discrimination against children." Words of wisdom from the new Pope who distanced himself from the liberation theology movement (the priests and nuns who actively opposed dictators and took risks for social justice).
Cristina kirchner, President of Argentina, said the Catholic Church under his leadership in the country was reminiscent of "medieval times and the inquisition."

(160,527 posts)Argentina's Pope Bergoglio a moderate focused on the poor

BUENOS AIRES - The first Latin American pope, Argentina's Jorge Bergoglio, is a theological conservative with a strong social conscience, and a modest man who declined the archbishop's luxurious residence to live in a simple apartment and travel by bus.
He was also the runner-up in the 2005 conclave that elected German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to become Pope Benedict. He was not an obvious candidate, but moderate cardinals looking for an alternative to the then Vatican doctrinal chief backed him.
His election came as a shock to Catholics because, at 76, he was considered far above the ideal age to replace a pope who broke tradition and resigned because of his advanced years. He had hardly been mentioned among the "papabili" (possible popes).
The decision to take the papal name Francis, the first pope to name himself after the legendary St Francis of Assisi, was also surprising because it evokes a life of simplicity and humility far removed from the splendour of the Vatican.

(62,325 posts)He was too close to the teachings of the man they claim to follow, but in reality was way too liberal for them, just like Chavez.
The right wing Chavez haters are hypocrites from my experience with them. Most of them claim to be Christians but hated him for helping the poor. Funny, isn't it, why anyone claiming to be a Christian would be so opposed to the beliefs and the example set for them by the man they claim to follow. I could never understand it. I asked them over and over again why they called themselves Christians. Chavez otoh, emulated Christ in his work for the poor. Yet they hated him for it.
I came to the conclusion that it's pointless to try to figure Right Wingers out. They are simply not capable of logical thinking.

As archbishop of Buenos Aires beginning in 1998 and a cardinal since 2001, he frequently tangled with Argentinas governments over social issues. In 2010, for example, he castigated a government-supported law to legalize marriage and adoption by same-sex couples as a war against God.
He has been less energetic, however, in urging the Argentine church to examine its own behavior during the 1970s, when the country was consumed by a conflict between right and left. In what became known as the Dirty War, as many as 30,000 people were disappeared, tortured or killed by a military dictatorship that seized power in March 1976.
In a long interview with an Argentine newspaper in 2010, Cardinal Bergoglio defended his behavior during the dictatorship. He said that he had helped hide people being sought for arrest or disappearance by the military because of their political views, had helped others leave Argentina and had lobbied the countrys military rulers directly for the release and protection of others.

I am a former Catholic who does not seem to have anything good to say. Bergoglio seems to be more about expanding the church and countering the "pentacostals". They will get to peace and social justice some day...
