Venezuela exceeds 300,000 satellite TV users

Venezuela exceeds 300,000 satellite TV users
Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 13-05-2013

Venezuela's national telecoms company, Cantv, has reached over 300,000 homes with its satellite television system.

By distributing antennae and decoders in different parts of the country, the public company is attempting to include all of the country's inhabitants in the digital revolution.

The TV service is offered through the satellite VENESAT-1, also known as Simon Bolivar, which has been in use since 2008. Venezuela's satellite platform has 48 television channels and 20 audio signals which offer a wide selection of national and international programmes.

Venezuela's Government has reinforced its agreement with Argentina to expand the DTT network through the Caribbean country. The plan is to distribute 750,000 set-top boxes and reach 80% of the population by 2015. Since the beginning of 2013 transmission systems have been installed in the most populated areas of the country, and seven more will be installed during the coming months.

And, as usual, the governments are those forced to take responsibility to do something about upgrading the telecommunication infrastructure of their countries, since the private oligopolies are basically leeches profiting without moving muscles and without investing a penny.
