Venezuela's Security Plan Cuts Crime By 30 Percent

Venezuela's Security Plan Cuts Crime By 30 Percent

CARACAS, July 9 (BERNAMA-NNN-XINHUA) -- Venezuela's new homeland security plan has helped cut crime by some 30 per cent since its implementation in mid-May, Interior and Justice Minister Miguel Rodriguez Torres said Monday.

Speaking at a press conference in Caracas, Rodriguez called the results of the Safe Homeland Plan, which put National Armed Forces officials in charge of security, "amazing."

"It's amazing that everything has happened in the area of prevention since the implementation of the Safe Homeland Plan," said Rodriguez.

Thanks to the plan, authorities have rescued 29 people who had been abducted, arrested 971 suspects for homicide, 81 for kidnapping and 231 for theft, and confiscated 979 pieces of firearms and 6,286 pieces of ammunition.

The plan was unveiled on May 13 by President Nicolas Maduro, who announced that more than 3,000 military officials would be deployed to Venezuela's largest cities to bolster crime-prevention actions.

When he was alive, Chavez neglected crime to such an extent murder and kidnap became really bad. Now they are trying to fix the problem in a hurry at a time when the country is nearly broke. Imagine how much better things could have been if the crime and corruption the people had been denouncing (and which Chavez ignored) had been fixed years ago.

This proves there's nothing like either a close election or outright losing it and hanging on to power somehow to make a politician improve. If Maduro had won by 10 % like Chavez used to do, things would be the same...and Venezuela would really be going down the drain. In a sense, it was a good idea for Chavez to die when he did, and for Maduro to have such a low esteem. He is getting Raul Castro's mentoring by the bucket load and it shows.

Chavez was as corrupt as they come and only cared about peoples' votes, not their lives. He did nothing to combat crime and I believe it increased every year of his corrupt governance.

Maduro is as eloquent as Bush. I am not sure there are many improvements. With regards to crime and homicides, at some point it simply cannot get any worse. Through May they actually surpassed last years homicide totals. Pronouncements by Ven administration officials cannot be taken seriously.
