Peru Calls For Reforms Of UN Security Council
LIMA, Sept 26 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANDINA) -- Peru has called for reforms and expansion of the United Nations (UN) Security Council as part of a number of initiatives to make this system more legitimate and effective.
President Ollanta Humala, addressing the 68th session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, said that Peru shares the position upheld by a large number of member states on the need to reform and expand the Council to reflect realities of the 21st century.
He said the reforms will make the UN system more legitimate, representative, accountable and effective through strengthening of its principal organs, specialised agencies and organisations in the areas of security and development.
"Peru is a reliable partner and committed to the causes of the world, and our commitment to the values and principles of this Assembly brings us to point out the need for reform," he said.
The Peruvian president also said that the Pacific Alliance, comprised of Peru, Mexico, Chile and Colombia, are moving toward integration with a strategic projection toward the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
