Peru, Chile To Abide By ICJ Judgement On Maritime Dispute
LIMA, Sept 26 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANDINA) -- Peru's President Ollanta Humala highlighted at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly that Peru and Chile shared the commitment to comply with and enforce the judgement to be rendered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the maritime dispute.
Humala said that it is gratifying and a source of pride for Peru to have managed, in the most constructive and cooperative way, the maritime delimitation dispute with Chile.
"The ruling will turn, I am sure, the paradigm of our relationship toward a profitable and enduring one for the future of our peoples," he noted.
In addition, Humala noted that the rule of law and its principles in international affairs is an indispensable condition for our conduct as part of the community of peoples of the UN.
In January 2008, Peru filed a demand in the ICJ in The Hague, claiming that the maritime border with Chile had never been defined while Chile states that fishing agreements dating from 1952 and 1954 identified the maritime border.
