Uribe’s former security chief arrested over links to Bogota crime lord

Authorities arrested the former security chief of Colombia’s former President Alvaro Uribe for the police general’s alleged ties to a Bogota crime lord.

Six months after linking retired police general Flavio Buitrago to convicted drug trafficker Marco Gil, alias the ‘Papero,’ officials from the Prosecutor General’s Office carried out the arrest.

According to the website of weekly Semana, the order followed declarations made by Gil and others, as well as over $300,000 of income unaccounted for in Buitrago’s bank account, and an attempt by Buitrago to renew his visa in order to travel to the United States. The ultimate action led the attorney’s office to order his arrest to prevent him from fleeing an investigation.

Buitrago is Uribe’s second security commander to be under investigation for ties to criminal groups. Former General Mauricio Santoyo is in prison in the United States after pleading guilty to aiding paramilitary groups while working for the former president.

Former Uribe security chief arrested in Colombia on illicit enrichment charges
By Vivian Sequera, The Associated Press September 30, 2013 4:10 PM

BOGOTA - A retired police general who was the security chief for former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe for four years was arrested Monday and charged with illicit enrichment.

Flavio Buitrago, 54, is the second former Uribe security chief in apparent drug corruption-related trouble. The first, Mauricio Santoyo, is serving a 13-year sentence in the U.S. after pleading guilty to taking bribes from paramilitary drug lords.

The chief prosecutor's press office said without offering details that Buitrago was arrested Monday when he appeared for questioning.

Various media reports have linked Buitrago to veteran drug trafficker and potato wholesaler Marco Antonio Gil Garzon, who was arrested in March on trafficking, money laundering and illicit enrichment charges.
