BOGOTA, Colombia With the final tally in from Sunday's municipal elections, the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSUV, won 242 out of 337 municipal and district mayoral seats, while its allies won an additional 13, the National Electoral Council reported. The coalition of opposition parties, known as the MUD, won 75 spots, and seven mayoral seats went to third-party candidates.
The results essentially leave Venezuela's political forces as they were after the 2008 municipal race. While both sides claimed victory, they were a let down for an opposition that narrowly lost the presidential race in April and hoped to have a stronger showing on the back of the country's economic crisis. The opposition entered this race with 73 mayor's seats.
In addition, The National Electoral Council said the PSUV and its allies won 49.24 percent of the national vote and the MUD and its allies won 42.72 percent.
