Cuba ends 2013 with lowest infant mortality rate in its history

Havana, Jan 2 (EFE).- Cuba ended 2013 with an infant mortality rate of 4.2 per 1,000 live births, the lowest level in the island's history, state media reported Thursday.

The Caribbean nation first achieved an infant mortality rate of less than 5.0 in 2008, when the rate was 4.7 per 1,000 live births.

Cuba has registered infant mortality rates of 4.8 per 1,000 live births in 2009; 4.5 per 1,000 live births in 2010; 4.9 per 1,000 live births in 2011; and 4.6 per 1,000 live births in 2012.

The island's infant mortality rate ranks it "among the leading nations in the world with the lowest rates," the daily Granma reported.

1. Good for Cuba!

I love that each person is visited at home once a year by a health professional, that doctors practice in every community, that prevention and good health techniques are stressed, that health workers take immense pride in being among the best, especially in response to trauma, and volunteer all around the globe .... just some of the many things to admire about Cuba's system.

Thank you for the thread, Judy Lynn.

mortality rate to increase in the wake of lower food stamp outlays and unemployments benefits being denied the long-term unemployed. Go USA, home of compassionate conservatism where the voraciously greedy often wear their love of Jesus on their sleeves.

in their personal pursuit of wealth with mandatory payments taken from people's labor, some of whom barely have enough for food, if at all, in a plan put forward by Republicans.

Instead, they spend it all on health, of all things.

They will never be US.

Cuban Society of Family Medicine Acknowledges Fidel Castro
Saturday, 04 January 2014 15:40
Written by RHC

Havana.- The Cuban Society of Family Medicine, a preventive medical project based on the family doctor and nurse, sent a special acknowledgement to Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro on the 30th anniversary of that Cuban program, which was founded January 4, 1984.

In the message the society expresses Fidel, who launched the medical initiative, the commitment of its members to keep developing the project as the core of the Cuban health system.

The Family Medicine program has contributed to lowering infant morality rate to only 4,2 in 2013, which places Cuba among the first countries of the world with the lowest indicators in that area, which include Canada with 5 and the United States with 6, according to the Cuban Health Ministry.

The message sent to Fidel recalls the setting up for the first time at health care in the Havana municipality of Diez de Octubre of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, considered a revolution within the Cuban Revolution. (RHC)

Cuban doctors are respected greatly all over the world. They have an amazing reputation throughout!

Right-wingers here keep pointing out how little they make, never grasping the fact these people, in most cases, are in medicine because they are pure of heart, they genuinely intend to help people as their life's calling, not their ego's expression.

It's hard for corrupt people to understand something so far beyond their "me-first" life experiences. What's sad about that is they come here, hoping to push their own selfish interests as the "moral" position.

Hooray for the evolved people in the world. They've never been more needed!

Woohoo, Cuban health system.
