http://www.eluniversal.com/economia/140312/iata-warns-that-some-airliners-could-stop-flying-to-venezuelaThe International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned on Wednesday that some airliners could stop flying to Venezuela amid a dispute over the freezing of USD 3.7 billion in cash owed by the Venezuelan government to foreign airliners.
IATA's CEO Tony Tyler said that he had written to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after a lack of progress in negotiations that began months before Venezuela's worst unrest in a decade, Reuters cited.
"It is unacceptable that Venezuela is not playing by the rules to which it is treaty-bound," Tyler said.
"I know some airlines are considering whether to stop flying (there) altogether. We very much hope that won't be the case but each airline is making its own commercial decision," he added.

(2,035 posts)I don't know, it seems a bit harsh to say "So go by ship" to any country when, you know, it costs much more to travel by ship and takes much longer too, and also the fact that a lot of destinations one can travel to by land, but again, would also take much more time and money to get there. What about the people who would like to visit Venezuela to see the glorious Bolivarian Revolution with their own eyes?

(2,035 posts)Just like every government in the world does. But apparently you seem to favor Venezuela remaining inaccessible by any means, and apparently you also think that flying is something that only "oligarchs" seem to do. Lemme tell ya, there's a lot of chavistas who love to visit the US, especially the boligarchs.

Give me a fucking break.
The government is the one responsible for airlines to get their pay, and they're not doing it. Nothing at all to do with the opposition. This is 100% the regime's fault, and if you can't accept that, well, then enjoy your little fantasy world that exists only in your head.

(2,035 posts)You're not really making a case for yourself here. You're openly supporting the idea of Venezuela remaining isolated due to the irresponsibility of a government for not paying its dues. For shame.

(62,270 posts)The Darien Gap actually starts at the border of Colombia. There is a ferry service but it's more like a shipping container service which will rob you blind from the various "inspections" and "permits" you have to undertake to use it. Then, you have to find alternate means into Panama. Nevermind the copious bribes you have to give to every single fucking person telling you that you can't continue on without bribing them.
To think an oligarch would undertake such an adventure is hilarious.
