Senators: We're Optimistic Cuba to Free Contractor

Two U.S. senators expressed optimism Tuesday that Cuba will free imprisoned American government contractor Alan Gross.

Sens. Jeff Flake, a Republican from Arizona, and Tom Udall, a Democrat from New Mexico, said they met with Gross for about two hours during a trip that included meetings with Cuban officials.

Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican, has been hot to formalize relations with Cuba since 2000, at least. I never could figure it out back then, when I started reading his name in articles concerning US/Cuba relations.

My only guess is that he is working with huge contractors like Del Webb, who has created retirement communities in Arizona (like Sun City, etc.) and his backers want that open door to Cuba first, before any others can get in there....

(Alan Gross' threat to off himself may be his way of saying he didn't expect the whole world to learn he was doing dirty work against Cuba for the U.S. Maybe he's close to dying of embarrassment.)
