Remains of Chilean Lawmaker Executed Under Pinochet Returned to Family
SANTIAGO – Chile’s Legal Medical Service, or SML, returned to his family on Friday the mortal remains of former Socialist lawmaker Luis Espinoza Villalobos, gunned down in December 1973 by militarized police of the Augusto Pinochet regime in the southern part of the country, officials of the organization said.
The family ceremony was held in the southern city of Puerto Montt, some 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) from Santiago, in the presence of current Socialist legislator Fidel Espinoza, son of the victim, and Alicia Lira, president of AFEP, a support group for relatives of political prisoners executed under the dictatorship, along with forensic experts and human rights attorneys.
Luis Espinoza was shot at age 33 in the Frutillar sector near Puerto Montt by a group of Carabineros guarding political prisoners being moved to a jail in another city.
Espinoza Villalobos, lawmaker for the area until March 1973, was a prisoner in the city of Valdivia who had been tried on contempt charges before the military coup. After the coup, he was taken to the regiment at Puerto Montt, where he was held incommunicado until the night he died.
After democracy was restored, the Rettig Commission confirmed the human rights violations, not trusting the versions told by the military.
