In Caracas, quality of life deteriorates

For 78% of Caracas residents, quality of life is downhill. In terms of services, they point to a backlash in security, health and transportation compared with five years ago. The findings are included in the latest report produced by NGO Por la Caracas Posible (For a Possible Caracas). The case study assesses the management of five jurisdictions that comprise the Metropolitan Area plus the Major Mayoralty.

Shortage of staples is top in the list of evils. In addition, families are subject to the end numbers of their identity cards to have access to goods and services. This situation will continue being chaotic for 48% of the interviewees, the NGO revealed. Insecurity, according to 57% of respondents, is among the most serious problems in Caracas.

Insecurity suffocates urbanizations and blocks of flats. According to Roberto León Parilli, the president of the National Alliance of Users and Consumers, the situation forces them to devise security protocols. The costs to implement security systems vary according to the complexity and extent.

The survey on Life Conditions in Venezuela 2014 specifies that 50% of the population lacks health coverage. The survey conducted by the Central University of Venezuela, Simón Bolívar University and Andrés Bello Catholic University notes that the Venezuelan Social Security Institute (IVSS) just provides aid to 22% of the population, and another 10% counts on private insurance. Venezuela is among the countries in the region where citizens use a large portion of their income for health care (62% of the family budget).
